For two consecutive weeks, television screens featured the campaign in 15″ and 30″ formats, making approximately 400 appearances. The focus remains on DESPAR Italia’s branded products, a key offering, capturing diverse moments from everyday and family life.

Geotargeted Programming

Expanding beyond traditional television, the campaign made its mark on connected TVs through geotargeted programming. Additionally, it seamlessly integrated into the content offerings of online video and on-demand platforms.

Not stopping at traditional media, DESPAR Italia included sponsorship activities on Facebook and Instagram, ensuring a robust digital presence for its “Count on Us” narrative.

From February 4 to 10, the campaign’s echoes also reverberated on radio, with over 500 broadcasts scheduled across major national broadcasters.

Ombretta Putzu, Head of Marketing and Communication at DESPAR Italia, shared insights into the campaign’s revival, emphasising a commitment to customer support through quality and convenience. Collaborative development

The initial own brand products exported were all developed in collaboration with Croatian manufacturers by SPAR Croatia. The success of these products in foreign markets is a reflection of the high quality of these own brand items.

In 2023, SPAR Croatia began exporting its Croatian own brands to the affiliated retail network in Austria, which has over 1,500 SPAR stores.

In Slovenia, sales revenue surged to €64 million from €52 million in 2022, primarily due to improved collaboration with Croatian producers including Zigante Tartufi, Vindija, ZMH Horvat, and Al Ponte. Direct exports of 43 Croatian own label products were placed into SPAR stores in Slovenia, increasing the market penetration of those producers.

SPAR Croatia has worked in partnership with local producers since the brand’s launch in 2005. Fresh produce is retailed under the ‘Gardens of Croatia’ and promoted through ‘Yes, Local’, campaigns. There is also a variety of SPAR Own Brand products procured in the local market, building on the regionally and internationally sourced ranges. In 2020, SPAR Croatia also launched a concept titled ‘Start Croatia’ which supports entrepreneurs keen to expand their business by accessing the formal retail market.

Budapest Metropolitan University

One innovation is the collaboration with the Budapest Metropolitan University to offer the SPAR Supplier Academy as part of its curriculum. Over a period of six months, university students had a unique opportunity to address real-life marketing issues faced by 16 small-scale suppliers.

SPAR Hungary’s Supplier Academy is committed to supporting Hungarian food producers and enterprises. As an extension of their programmes, suppliers from both the Hungaricool and Regional Treasures initiatives were able to obtain expert marketing advice from the students at Budapest Metropolitan University. Each applicant presented the marketing challenges and issues they were encountering in their respective companies.

Empowering entrepreneurs

The collaboration empowered participating enterprises to grow and provided students with invaluable practical experience, further enhancing their skills and competencies. The entrepreneurs were delighted to engage young talents with fresh perspectives in their decision-making processes. In turn, the students appreciated the opportunity to work on practical, real-life tasks, which complemented their theoretical learning.

In the face of unprecedented challenges such as the pandemic, energy crisis, and inflation, Hungarian enterprises, particularly small businesses in the food industry, have faced significant obstacles in recent years. Recognising the importance of supporting domestic families and small food businesses, SPAR Hungary launched the Hungaricool product competition in 2019. Additionally, since 2021, the Regional Treasures programme has been connecting shoppers at SPAR with products from domestic small-scale producers.

Enterprise survey

To understand the needs of businesses participating in these programmes amid the current economic climate, SPAR Hungary conducted a survey. The results revealed that 76% of respondents identified the importance of learning effective negotiating skills while staying competitive (64%) and developing price strategies (64%) were equally significant. Furthermore, 60% emphasized the role of brand communication during economic recessions, and 40% sought knowledge on expanding their customer base. Trade events were also valued for practical knowledge, networking opportunities, and exposure to current trends.

Marketing Bootcamp

To address these needs and challenges, SPAR Hungary offers suppliers access to a SPAR Marketing Bootcamp. The 2023 event attracted over 100 suppliers, providing them with diverse professional training sessions and insightful discussions on navigating the uncertain economic landscape.

Attila Tollas, SPAR Hungary’s Regional Procurement Team Manager and a speaker at the SPAR Marketing Bootcamp, stated, “During the Bootcamp, we focused on reflecting on the economic situation, with several presentations dedicated to this topic. Additionally, we delved into all four aspects of the traditional marketing mix, as we recognised the demand for comprehensive knowledge in this area.”

The two-day event creates a platform where suppliers can connect, share experiences, and find solutions to common problems. The positive feedback SPAR Hungary received indicates that the retail company is moving in the right direction.

Participants praised the SPAR Marketing Bootcamp which offers tailored marketing, strategy, and communication materials for the food industry, provided by SPAR and invited experts. The networking opportunities are considered particularly invaluable, building connections with fellow entrepreneurs.

New and modernised stores

SPAR Hungary ended the year 2022 with 623 stores nationwide. A total of 18.6 billion HUF was invested in the development of two new stores in Budapest and the modernisation of 11 existing stores across the country.

Sustainability is the main focus when it comes to store development. All new and modernised stores have a reduced environmental impact and implemented energy-efficient solutions, including LED-lighting, solar panels, CO2-based cooling technologies, and charging stations for electric cars. By 2021, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 49% compared to 2017. This positive tendency continued in 2022.

SPAR partner programme celebrates 10th anniversary

The first SPAR partner franchise store opened ten years ago in Mór. Currently, 248 stores are operated by independent retailers. In 2022, the network was extended by 14 new stores. With sales of 103.1 billion HUF, the franchise stores contributed about 10% of SPAR Hungary’s total turnover in 2022.

Expanded online platform

SPAR Hungary’s online shop was launched three years ago and expanded substantially in 2022.

Across 200 locations, about 18,000 products and 30 instore pick-up points are available for customers. Over 150,000 online orders were made in 2022. The company switched from printed order overviews to digital ones, saving over three tonnes of paper each year. Customers can now also return their paper bags to be recycled.

Own brand products across borders

Since their launch in 1997, SPAR Hungary’s own brand products have become increasingly popular. In 2022, the range was expanded by 10%. Own brand products now account for one third of the total sales. Some of these products became available for shoppers abroad in June 2022, when SPAR Slovenia started importing dry and frozen SPAR Own Brand products from Hungary.

Sustainability measures

SPAR Hungary has increased the percentage of collected paper and plastic to over 70%. Last year, plastic use was reduced by 13.5 tonnes, and through the introduction of thinner packaging film for meat products, another 84 tonnes of plastic per year will be reduced. Since August 2022, only biodegradable bags for fruit and vegetables are offered in all stores nationwide, leading to 450 tonnes less plastic every year.

There are 80 SPAR stores where shoppers can return used cooking oil for recycling. SPAR Hungary also provides the option to return PET and aluminium cans, used batteries, paper, and glass waste.

In total, SPAR created nearly 1,400 new jobs in 2022 through its expansion.

Consolidating market leadership

The SPAR Austria Group operates 3,026 SPAR (in Italy: DESPAR), EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores in Austria, Northern Italy, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. Gross sales turnover in all of these countries grew to a total of €15.92 billion, an increase of 5.5%.

In Austria, SPAR consolidated its market leadership with a market share of 36.3%. SPAR operates a total of 1,506 SPAR stores in Austria, of which 1,067 are SPAR Supermarkets, 50 SPAR Gourmet stores, 79 SPAR Express forecourt stores, 232 EUROSPAR Supermarkets, 71 INTERSPAR Hypermarkets, and seven Maximarkt stores. A total of 679 of the SPAR stores are operated by independent retailers. In 2022, SPAR Austria opened around 40 new stores and modernised over 70 stores.

In May 2022, the new INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Oberwart, Burgenland, was opened and construction of two new INTERSPAR Hypermarkets in Leibnitz (Styria) and Gänserndorf (Burgenland) begun.

Growing presence in Vienna

SPAR Austria has operated SPAR Gourmet stores in Vienna for over 20 years, located in districts with a demand for delicatessen-oriented ranges. To augment this store network of 39, SPAR Austria has developed a flexible store concept enabling it to meet customers’ needs to an even greater extent. The first redesigned SPAR Gourmet store opened in October 2022 at Vienna’s Fleischmarkt in the 1st district.

 SPAR Own Brands

SPAR Austria focuses on continuous development of its assortment, especially in the area of fresh products and SPAR Own Brands. SPAR has developed over 7,500 own brand products, comprising food and non-food products. SPAR Own Brands contribute to more than 40% of the company’s food retail sales. The development of SPAR Own Brands also addresses changed consumer shopping behaviour due to the pandemic and rising inflation.

Organic products continue to be in strong demand and so do products for flexitarians, vegetarians or vegans. SPAR Austria invested nearly €3 million in own brand product development and corresponding facilities. The SPAR Veggie range was expanded to over 100 products and sales increased by 8.5%.

Sustainability initiatives

About 160 photovoltaic systems are currently installed on the roofs of SPAR, EUROSPAR, and INTERSPAR stores.

SPAR Austria cooperated with nine leading domestic electricity suppliers to expand the e-charging network in the last year. By 2025, over 200 e-charging locations will be added to the existing 120 locations at SPAR, EUROSPAR, and INTERSPAR stores.

SPAR Austria is continuing to pioneer innovative ways to reduce food waste. In 2022, SPAR developed an accurate solution with its IT partners using Artificial Intelligence. The solution enables more targeted order suggestions and demand forecasts for all stores. This reduced the amount of unsold food by 10% in that year. Moreover, products that are close to their best-before date are sold at a reduced price on a separate shelf, via the Too Good To Go app or donated to one of over 400 social organisations.

Winning concept

SPAR Poland was delighted to receive this award as confirmation that the SPAR business concept is both attractive to independent retailers and effective.

“We strongly believe that by working together, supporting and building relationships with our partners, and focusing on what consumers want, we will all succeed. At SPAR, we focus on the shopping experience, the freshness and quality of our products, and the service we offer our customers. We are part of local communities and communities are like families. We strive to deliver the highest quality products every day at a good price.
